Yes, there’s a new song in the poetry hole. And yes, it depicts my courtship with my wife and Best Buddy. (Those two are the same person, by the way.) I had a little trouble with commitment, and a little trouble expressing my affection. So I always told her that I liked her. Sometimes, due to a slip of the tongue, I’d say “I love ya,” but then I’d say, “I mean, I like ya. I’m so confused.”
We also decided we were having such fun as buddies that we were never going to get married, but plans changed one day when I began asking her whether she might consider marrying me if I ever asked her. She said she’d consider it. Then I asked her if she’d consider it and decide to marry me, if I asked her. And she said she would. So I asked her, and she said, “What are you talking about?”
Essentially, that is really what happened, and we got married. And yes, I’m a hopeless non-romantic. But she is still my Best Buddy, and I really do like her a lot. So this song is for my Best Buddy.

“I Like Ya,” a True Story
